75th Anniversary of Weeki Wachee Celebration and Unveiling of The Mermaid Tale Trail Postponed in the Aftermath of Hurricane Ian

Due to the State’s ongoing focus on recovery and restoration in Southwest Florida, the 75th-anniversary celebration and unveiling of the Mermaid Tale Trail statues have been postponed.

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park released a statement, “In the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, the 75 years of Mermaid Magic Celebration at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park will be postponed and rescheduled for another date. We look forward to celebrating with everyone as soon as possible.”

“Now is the time to focus on restoring and rebuilding as we all look for ways to help our family, friends, and neighbors in southwest Florida.” Said Tammy Heon, Manager, Tourism Development for Florida’s Adventure Coast Visitors Bureau. “We look forward to the celebration and the unveiling of The Mermaid Tale Trail at a later date.”

This legacy project coincides with the 75th anniversary of Weeki Wachee Springs State Park – Home of the World-Famous Mermaids. In honor of the Park’s anniversary, 26 mermaid statues will be placed throughout the entire county, creating a trail of public art in the form of mermaids. The original mermaid statue was hand sculpted, and her face was cast from an actual Weeki Wachee Mermaid. Each statue was then hand-painted by a juried artist, creating a one-of-a-kind work of art that will be included on a trail throughout Florida’s Adventure Coast, Brooksville-Weeki Wachee.

“As a sponsor of one of these fantastic mermaid statues, we are greatly disappointed that the Mermaid Tale Trail unveiling and celebration of Weeki Wachee’s 75th Anniversary have to be delayed, but we would rather see Florida use its resources to help those devastated by Hurricane Ian,” said Diane Bedard, Publisher of NatureCoaster.com.

If you were planning to attend the celebration this Thursday, October 13, please accept the apologies of everyone involved for the inconvenience caused by the postponement and join us in supporting our fellow Floridians.

Stay tuned for an announcement of the rescheduled date.

southwest florida was devastated when this hurricane hit. my town (just 100 miles south) was obliterated. we did not need tourists coming while doing cleanups. i evacuated to orlando (central florida) and there was still a considerable amount of damage. these women, more than anyone else should have understood that the reunion was at stake when hurricane ian hit southwest florida.
