American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course Coming to Inverness in March
The City of Inverness will be offering the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification Class March 24 – 27, 2018. Lifeguarding can be a rewarding job opportunity helping to develop decision making and leadership skills as well as developing a sense of responsibility. The American Red Cross Lifeguarding class is designed to give those that successfully complete the course the ability to recognize and respond to emergencies in and around pool environments. Student will have an understanding of patron surveillance, accident/injury prevention, CPR, AED and first aid as well as many other professional skills.
The classes will be offered March 24 – 27, 2018 (Saturday – Tuesday) at our Whispering Pines City Park Aquatic Facility. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday’s class will be conducted from 9 am until 4 pm and Sunday, March 25th class will be held from 12 noon until 4 pm. Required age for prospective students is 15 years old and you must attend all class session including the prerequisite skill session. The mandatory prerequisite skill check will be administered on Saturday, March 17th from 9 – 10 am at Whispering Pines City Park Aquatic Facility.
The cost for the Lifeguard Certification class is $145 and will include over seven (7) hours of on-line course and over twenty (20) hours of class/pool skill learning. The fee does not include the manual which can be downloaded free or ordered as a hard copy from www.redcross.org at $35 per copy. The fee does not include the Red Cross online registration fee of $35 which is paid by the participant to access the online portion of the class. The online registration is completed once the participant successfully completes the prerequisite portion of the course.
Prerequisite course for Saturday, March 17th will include:
- Student must be 15 years of age on or before last day of class (March 17, 2018 )
- Student must demonstrate the ability to swim 300 yards continuously (goggles permitted) showing proper kick, stroke and rhythmic breathing using breast and/or free style.
- Student must be able to tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs
- Student must be able to swim 20 yards (no goggles), surface dive to ten feet, retrieve a 10 pound object and return to the surface swimming on their back holding the object on the chest with both hands to the starting point of the exercise and getting yourself and the object out of the water. This must be accomplished in no more than one minute, forty seconds.
Participant registration along with payment must be made prior to March 10th at Whispering Pines City Park Aquatic Facility. There will be a $35 non-refundable fee for processing if unable to pass the skill check. For further information, please call the Aquatics Complex at (352)726-1995.
