“Banjo Al” Day in Old Homosassa

By Kathy Green Posted on April 4, 2017

The weather people have predicted another gorgeous weekend here in Old Homosassa. Don’t you want to be outside enjoying all that sunshine? Of course you do!

And I’ve got an outdoor event that you might not have heard about.

Saturday, April 8th is “Banjo Al Day” at the Old Mill Tavern. I first heard about “Banjo Al Day” when Chuck Andrews helped me out with the Old Homosassa Community Day back in March. I did the organizing for the day and included an “open mic”.

Now, let me tell you, I’ve NEVER done an “open mic” before. But not having experience hasn’t stopped me in the past! And it didn’t this time, either. I just kept asking people I knew in the local music community many many many questions and one volunteered to take on the organizing and another said she’d bring the sound equipment. (Maybe they got tired of my persistent questioning or maybe they are really true friends??)

Everything was going great until we realized that the mic stand was missing. And that’s when I met Chuck Andrews.

Now, I kinda knew him. I’ve heard him play and he is amazing. Plus he’s a friend of a friend. But, never really talked to him.

Chuck immediately went home and got a mic stand. And after the “open mic” players were finished, he took the stage and closed out the set on his 12-string guitar.

Totally wonderful. Old Homosassa is a small community but we seem to have a WHOLE lot of people with big hearts and amazing talent.

And that’s what’s happening this Saturday at the Old Mill Tavern. Chuck has set up a day to celebrate Albert Funari’s life. “Banjo Al” lived in Crystal River and played with many local groups. He sadly lost his life in a car accident on February 19th.

The celebration will be a day of music and fun. Besides an open jam, Fred George will open. Nick Buono, Jojo Jones and Melanie Linkous will also be on the stage. In between sets, Christine will be leading karaoke.

So if you’re looking for a fun and entertaining time this weekend, stop by the Old Mill Tavern. Noon to late. Celebrate a life well lived with people that know how to live well!
