 August 4^th 8:00 PM            Movie Night: Our last movie night of the summer is open for ages 5+. Bring the kids and join us for a family friendly movie shown indoors at the Conservation Center. Movie is approximately 80 minutes. No registration required, movie is free, snacks and drinks available for a donation. 

August 5^th 10:00 AM         Map and Compass: Before GPS navigation relied on the use of a magnetic compass. A compass can still, in many cases, be the most reliable navigation tool available. Learn, hands-on, to navigate using a compass and how that combined with a good map can get you anywhere you need to go! Please register for this class by calling (352) 754-6722. Class is free and runs for 2 hours.

August 8^th 10:00 AM         Microphotography: Knowledge of the workings of the world can be expanded by examining common place things through magnifying lenses, insects, parasites, pollen and many more items will be available for photographers during this class.  August 8^th 6:30 PM            Dragonflies: Dragonflies are a fascinating creature whose presence on earth dates back around 300 million years. The changes in dragonflies over their existence on earth can illuminate many details about the changes in their environment. Today, dragonflies can tell us a lot about their modern habitats. Join the Conservation Center staff for a talk on dragonflies, their life cycle and the types that can be found in our area.       

 August 11^th 10:00 AM       Fall Vegetable Gardening: Join Dr. William Lester from UF/IFAS Extension office of Hernando County for this class on what to plant, how to plant and how to meet your garden’s needs to reap a tasty harvest. No registration required for this free program.

 August 12^th 10:00 AM       Geo-seeking: This introduction to geocaching will get you up to speed on the varieties of geocaches, some common terms, basic GPS navigation and how to track down caches. Join the world-wide scavenger hunt!   Call (352) 754-6722 to register, the Center will provide GPS units for the class, supplies are limited. 

August 19^th 10:00 AM        Volunteer Chinsegut: This is the final opportunity this summer for those interested in information on volunteer programs at Chinsegut to join the staff and current volunteers for a look at some of the FWC volunteer projects in our area. This date will focus on bird related projects relating to Red-cockaded Woodpeckers and Southeastern American Kestrels. Register by calling (352) 754-6722. 

August 19^th 2:00 PM          Children in the WILD; Fire: Ages 5-9 are invited to Chinsegut to learn about fire, some superstitions on fire, the Smokey Bear Story and forest fire model demonstration. All activities for the kids are hands-on. This program is free but registration is required by calling (352) 754-6722. 

August 25^th 4:00 PM          Bug Blitz: Spend the evening at Chinsegut with Dr. William Lester of the UF/IFAS Hernando extension Office learning about bugs. Participants will travel around the Conservation Center and Environmental area to explore the contents of a variety of traps pre-set to collect a sample of the insect life of Chinsegut. Program runs until after dark and end with a moth light trap. Stop on in and view the collection or join the hunt. Free program for all ages, no registration required.

August 27^th 8:00 AM         Walking Sticks Hike; Big Pine WEA: This month’s club hike will take place at Big Pine Environmental Area located off of Old Crystal River Road in Brooksville. Big Pine is the southernmost extent of virgin longleaf pine forest in Florida. Learn about the history, restoration and management of Big Pine during this 1 hour walk.
