Chinsegut Conservation Center December 2018 Programs

Chinsegut Conservation Center is open to the public from 8 AM until 2 PM Fridays and Saturdays and other times for scheduled programs or by appointment. Educators and organized groups can book programs year-round based on staff and volunteer availability.

The Center hosts many wildlife education programs and hikes throughout the year. Fun educational programs connect visitors with biologists and wildlife experts to explore and become familiar with Florida’s unique and sensitive natural areas. Located 6 miles north of Brooksville, Chinsegut Conservation Center Tract covers 408 of the 850 acres comprising Chinsegut Wildlife and Environmental Area (WEA). December 2018 programs are below:

December 7th 10:00 AM                  

Florida, bugs and you

Bugs are a lot of things, including incredibly beneficial. Join Lilly browning for this program on the lineup of Florida bugs and who is helpful or harmful. Free program, no need to register. 1 Hour program

December 7th 5:00 PM                    

Owl Prowl night hike at Perry Oldenburg: This night hiking opportunity is a fun way to explore outdoors and see who is up when the sun goes down. Join Chinsegut educator Katie for a stroll to look and listen for one of the four owl species known to be found near Perry Oldenburg and anything else on the move. This is a free program, registration required, adults only. Call (352) 754-6722 for instruction on where to meet and to register. 2 Hour program

December 8th 9:00 AM                    

3-D Archery

Please plan to arrive before 9 AM to register to participate. All members of the public are invited to bring their bows and join this exciting new opportunity to shoot a 15 lane 3-d archery course sponsored by Drawn by Grace. Fees are requested to help us maintain equipment and provide new exciting archery opportunities for the future. Fees: 12 and under are free, ages 13-16 5$, adults 10$ or 25$ maximum per family. Map and Compass

Navigation is an important part of outdoor skills and survival. Learn how famous explorers charted courses and sailed the seas before GPS. Class covers map reading basics and detailed compass use with field practical. Free program, ages 10+ register online or by calling (352) 754-6722. 2 Hour program

December 9th 10:00 AM                  

Nature Photography

Professional photographer and nature lover Alice Herden of Green-fly Media offers a monthly opportunity to learn more about your DSLR camera and getting great shots outdoors. Alice has an amazing nature portfolio and lots of opportunities for photographers of all levels to join her in the field. Registration and a $20.00 fee required. Chinsegut Field Trip to Perry Oldenburg

Perry Oldenburg is a little known, well-hidden gem among local conservation lands. Join this guided hike to learn about Perry Oldenburg and the secrets it holds. Free hike, please register and get directions for where to meet by calling (352) 754-6722. Hike up to 2.5 miles. Adults only. 2 Hour program

To feed, or not to feed

There are many sides to the controversy over feeding wildlife. If you have ever wondered who you should feed, when and how, this is a class for you. This class covers the ethical dilemmas raised by feeding wildlife and the expert recommendations of wildlife agencies and conservation groups as well as tips for safety of people and wildlife. This is a free class, no need to register.2 Hour program

Christmas Bird Count

Tree Rings

A look at dendrochronology or tree ring dating. Trees can provide critical information on environmental conditions if you know what to look for. Join us for a fun informal program on analyzing rings and dating trees. No registration required. Best suited for ages 10+.1.5 Hour program

December 18th 4:00 PM                  

Tuesday Wildlife Trek

Meet at Perry Oldenberg WEA east of US 41 on Deer Run Rd. for an evening stroll to look for signs of wildlife. This is a great location for turkey, deer, owls and more. Free hike ages 12+, call (352) 754-6722 to let us know you’re coming. 2 Hour program

Pudgy Party

Make a number of delectable treats in a pudgy (pie iron) provided by Not a Clue Adventures as part of this outdoor family friendly dinner activity. So many combinations to test out, so bring the kids and share a few. Pre-registration and a $8.00 fee per person required. Birding 101

Birding is a fun hobby which can be passive or competitive, done alone or in groups and keeps you learning all the time. If you are interested in learning about birds and bird ID and some of the great reward programs that go along with birding join us for this detailed program.  Classroom instruction and field work included. First Day of Winter Hike at Big Pine

Each year we celebrate the beginning of winter at Chinsegut with a walk and talk about what winter in Florida looks like compared with other eastern areas. This year’s hike will be held at Big Pine Tract. RSVP to attend online or by calling (352) 754-6722. Hike will meet at Big Pine Parking area, Old Crystal River Road. 1.5 Hour program

December 22nd 2:00 PM                 

Children in the WILD; Deer

Take a break from the hustle of the holidays and check in at Chinsegut with the kids to explore the life of deer. Kids 5-9 can explore the natural history of deer through games and activities. This is a free program, please RSVP to attend online or by calling (352) 754-6722. 1 Hour program

December 27th-28th 9 AM – 3 PM  

Archery Beyond Beginners

This two-day archery exploration program will take students from the basics of beginning archery to planning a hunt and the ethics of hunting. All equipment is provided by the Center. Encourage your child to learn more about this historic skill in our safe environment. This class is limited to 12 participants by pre-registration. Children must bring water and a lunch each day. The cost is 20.00 per child, Ages 10-16, register at (352) 754-6722.

Beginning Birding Hike

Take advantage of the weather by joining this guided birding stroll through Chinsegut. Hike begins at the center at 8 AM. Program offered through Hernando Audubon volunteers. 1-3 Hour program

Walking Sticks Hike; Chinsegut

This monthly hiking club meets at a variety of FWC managed lands around Brooksville. This month we will hike the connector trail from Chinsegut to Big Pine.
