Chinsegut Conservation Center February 2020 Programs

February 1 st 10:00 AM Guided Hike, Big Pine Tract:

This hike is open for all ages to attend. Visit a towering pine community and learn a little about the plants, animals, and management of this forest dubbed the southernmost virgin stand of longleaf pines in Florida. Meet at Big Pine, 12060 Old Crystal River Rd. Brooksville. Approximately 2-mile hike, mostly grassy surface.
The program runs 1.5 hours

February 7th, 10:00 AM IFAS Wonderful Water:

Bring the kids to this educational program! They will learn about the water cycle and take a walk to May’s Prairie to explore a native wetland. Wear shoes and clothes suitable for exploring in the woods, water, and insect repellent. The walk to the wetland and back is 2 miles. No need to register.
The program runs up to 2 hours

February 7th, 6:00 PM Night Hike

Winter-breeding frogs: A select few frog species are vocal and amorous in
the cooler months of the year. Ages 8+ can attend this guided night hiking/ dip-netting journey to May’s Prairie to document what tadpoles can be found this February. Please register online or at (352) 754-6722. Limited to 15 people.
The program runs 2.0 Hours

February 8th, 9:00 AM 3-D Archery Shoot:

Archers should arrive by 9 AM to join us for this shoot to prepare for
the upcoming ASA ‘tournament’ shoot in April. The course is 15 lanes with 3-D target variety.
Sight in your bow on our practice range. A small fee applies to help us continue to maintain our equipment. Call (352) 754-6722 for more information, no registration required. Join
Drawn by Grace for provided lunch following the shoot. Allow 3-4 hours to participate fully.

February 14th, 9:00 AM Centralia Trip

This guided visit to the Centralia historic site will take place at the
Chassahowitzka WMA on US 19. Meet at the main check station at 9:30 am or follow us over at 9 am from Chinsegut. Space limited, register by calling (352) 754-6722 or email Chinsegut@MyFWC.com or online. It requires a hike through heavily forested and swampy terrain off the beaten trail.
Program runs 3 Hours including drive time

Feb 15th, 10:00 AM Beginners Archery

Learn the basics of target archery using compound bows from
skilled instructors. This program is for ages 12+, advanced registration is required. All equipment is provided by Chinsegut Conservation Center. Register at (352) 754-6722 or online at MyFWC.com/Chinsegut.

February 15th, 2:00 PM Children in the WILD

Peewee Archery: An opportunity for mom or dad to work alongside youngsters who are interested in learning archery. Ages 5-9 will have an
opportunity to learn the basics of archery using our scaled-down equipment, one-on-one coaching, and help from mom or dad. Space is limited for this one-hour program. Register at (352) 754-6722.

February 21st, 9:00 AM Eagles at Hernando County Landfill

Join a group of bird watchers on an eagle expedition. Learn how eagles are intertwined in waste management, how waste services
balance their input and impact for sensitive species and help with conservation. Juvenile and adult eagles will be observed on this trip. Ages 12+ only, please. Register at (352) 754-6722. Meet at Chinsegut at 9:00 AM.

February 22nd, 10:00 AM Guided Hike, Perry Oldenberg

This cattle pasture turned environmental area has beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife. Take a hike with us and enjoy this picturesque
property. Free guided hike, adults only. The terrain is primarily sand, trail under 2 miles, uphill and down through pine forest. Hike meets at Perry Oldenberg entrance at 10 am at the end of Deer Run Rd. off US 41 in Brooksville. Call in advance for directions if needed (352)

February 28th, 8:00 AM Beginning Birding with Audubon

Take advantage of the weather by joining this guided birding stroll through Chinsegut. The hike begins at the center at 8 AM. The program offered through Hernando Audubon volunteers. See songbirds, wading birds and maybe even catch a glimpse of the great horned owl.
