Chinsegut Conservation Center May 2019 Programs

Chinsegut Conservation Center is open to the public from 8 AM until 2 PM Fridays and Saturdays and other times for scheduled programs or by appointment. Educators and organized groups can book programs year-round based on staff and volunteer availability.

The Center hosts many wildlife education programs and hikes throughout the year. Fun educational programs connect visitors with biologists and wildlife experts to explore and become familiar with Florida’s unique and sensitive natural areas. Located 6 miles north of Brooksville, Chinsegut Conservation Center Tract covers 408 of the 850 acres comprising Chinsegut Wildlife and Environmental Area (WEA). May 2019 programs are below:

May 1st 10:30 AM           

Nature Explorers; Wilderness Safety, Ages 5-9: Our last class for the semester focuses on outdoor safety. Youth will learn about navigation, what to do if they become lost and about plants and animals that they should avoid. Includes a .75-mile walk. No need to register for this outdoor class. Program length 1.5 hours

 

May 1st 10 AM                 

Butterfly Brunch: An opportunity to enjoy a meal and an education on the common butterflies of Florida. Cost is $12 per person visit not-a-clue-adventures.com for more information. Participants will take home a book set for butterfly gardening, and common Florida butterflies.

 

May 3rd 10:00 AM           

Aliens in your yard: From the pesky to the down-right weird Florida yards can be host to a number of alien invaders. Learn who is a friend and who is foe and when to call in extra forces in this great program presented by the Hernando Extension office. This is a free program for adult residents, no need to register. Program length 1 hour

 

May 5th All Day               

Big Day: Support bird conservation by making Sunday, May 5th a Big Day. Join Florida Nature Trackers or eBird to contribute your bird sightings to science. iNaturalist and Florida Nature Trackers are a great free way to learn more and get help with ID of wildlife around your home. May 7th 12:30 PM           

Wild ABOUT Florida: This 4-week course will take place each Tuesday through 5/21 from 12:30  until 4:00 PM. Adult participants can learn about Florida wildlife, managing wildlife in your landscape, Florida agencies, what they offer for the public, land management and other useful information for new Floridians or those just wanting to know more about Florida. $20.00 registration includes a packet of useful resources to keep. May 10th 10:00 AM        

The American Alligator: One of only two remaining alligator species on earth the American Alligator instills a wide range of feelings in people who encounter them. This program will cover the life history, conservation history, and status of Florida’s famous reptile. This is a free program no need to register, ages 12+ only. Program length 1 hour

 

May 11th 9:00 AM          

3-D Archery Weekend: Stop in for a round of 3-D archery on the 15 lane woods course before the hot weather and summer storms roll in. Archers with their own equipment may sight in and shoot the course, no crossbows. Fess apply to help maintain targets. No registration required, call (352) 754-6722 for more information. May 11th 9 AM – 3 PM  

Backpacking 101: Not a Clue Adventures, an outfitter providing outdoor adventures to those without a clue how to get started is offering a Backpacking 101 at Chinsegut. The full-day class will be held May 11th with an extended hike and overnight camping trip hosted the weekend of May 18th and 19th. Learn what you need to pack and what to leave behind and so much more to get you on your way to comfortable in the outdoors. This class is good for day hikers and overnighting and extended hikes.

 

 

May 11th 10:00 AM        

Peewee Archery: An opportunity for mom or dad to work alongside youngsters who are interested in archery. Ages 5-9 will have an opportunity to learn the basics using our scaled-down equipment, one-on-one coaching, and help from mom or dad. Space is limited for this one-hour program. May 12th 10:00 AM        

Nature Photography 101: Photographer and nature lover Alice Herden of Green-fly Media offers a monthly opportunity to learn more about DSLR cameras and getting great shots outdoors. Alice offers lots of opportunities for photographers of all levels to join her in the field. Registration and a $20.00 fee required. May 18th 10:00 AM        

Beginners Archery: Learn the basics of archery under the guidance of Certified instructors. Chinsegut will provide all equipment, no outside equipment allowed. Ages 10+ are invited to participate in this session. Registration required at (352) 754-6722. Program Length: 1.5 Hours

 

May 18th 2:00 PM           

Children in the WILD; Butterflies: Ages 5-9 can explore the fascinating world of butterflies through games and activities at Chinsegut. See preserved butterflies and learn about these wonders with wings. This is a free program, please let us know you’re coming by registering online or by calling (352) 754-6722. Program length 1 hour

 

May 25th 8:30 AM          

Walking Sticks, Big Pine Tract: This monthly guided hike will be exploring the blooms of the Big Pine Tract. See what wildlife is drawn to the flowers and plan to visit with us again in the fall to compare varieties. Free hike open to ages 16+, will meet at the Big Pine parking area on Old Crystal River Rd. Hike length approximately 1.5 miles. Program length 1.5 hours

 

May 25th 10:00 AM        

Map and Compass: This informative Map and Compass session is open to the public, ideal for ages 12+. Learn how to read a map and navigate terrain using a compass. Includes in-class learning and outdoor practical. This is a free program, registration is required online at MyFWC.com/Chinsegut or by calling (352) 754-6722. Program length 2 Hours
