Chinsegut Conservation Center October 2017 Programs

October 1st 10 AM- 4 PM              Small World Photography Exhibit: A specialized photography exhibit showcasing the works of multiple photographers and their exploration of insects. This is a free exhibit. Stop in to see the variety of the unseen world.

October 3rd 5:00-6:30 PM             Youth Archery, four week class: This Beginners archery program for ages 10-16 will meet every Tuesday in October from 5:00 until 6:30 PM, with the exception of the 31st. Enrollment is limited to 16 children on a first come, first served basis. Registration by phone only at (352) 754-6722. This class is free, all equipment provided by Center. Dates: October 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th.

October 7th 10:00 AM                    Map and Compass: Want to know more about wilderness navigation using one of the earliest and simplest navigation tools? Ages 12+ can register to attend our introduction to map and compass course at (352) 754-6722. Class is free, all equipment provided. Class includes indoor training session and outdoor skills practical.

October 7th 2:00 PM                       Children in the WILD; Bears: Rescheduled from September, This program, open to ages 5-9 allows children to explore the life of a Florida Bear through games, story-telling and crafts. Please register children for this program by calling (352) 754-6722 or at

October 8th 9 AM – 2 PM              Basic Photography Workshop: Join Alice of Green-Fly Media for a fun day learning some creative DSLR camera tricks and all about camera settings. For more information or to register visit

October 13th 10:00 AM                  Organic Vegetable Gardening; UF/IFAS: Vegetables grown the old fashioned way, using nothing but nature. Learn how during this informational class offered free through the University of Florida’s food and agricultural sciences Hernando extension office.

October 14th 10:00 AM                  Beginners Archery; Youth ages 10+ may be registered to attend a single day, two hour introductory archery class. This program is free and limited to 16 enrollees. Register at (352) 754-6722.

October 14th 1:00 PM                    Wings of HOPE: Join animal rehabilitator Michele of HOPE Wildlife as she discusses her magnificent birds of prey and her work in wildlife rehab. HOPE wildlife is a non-profit rescue that relies on community support. Program attendance is free but please consider bringing bleach, clean towels, paper towel rolls, Lowes or Walmart gift certificates or cash to donate during the program to help Michele provide hope to more wildlife.

October 20th 12:00 PM                  Pine Basket weaving with artist Dodie Ulery: Dodie has perfected the art of the pine needle basket using modern materials to create baskets that will stand the test of time. This class consist of three 3-hour sessions that will give you all the knowledge and skill to create a gorgeous keepsake. Registration is through the artist, details online at Fee required.

Bat houses help to attract the insect-eating mammals to your yard.

October 20th 6:30 PM                     Night Hike: Ages 5+ can register to join the Center staff for a guided night hike. In celebration of Bat Week (October 24th -31st) there will be a short discussion on Florida bats and conservation as well as a viewing of the nearly 2000 Brazilian free-tailed bats leaving the Chinsegut houses. October 21st 2:00 PM                     CITW Snakes: Certainly is a popular time of year to have slithering serpents on the mind. Not only is Halloween coming but Florida’s snakes are more active as they approach their dormant season. Ages 4-9 can register to attend this fun, educational program on snakes that will incorporate stories, games, live animals or other activities. Register online or by calling (352) 754-6722.

October 24th 10:00 AM                  Bird Photography: Fall birds have arrived, professional photographer Alice Herden will introduce you to how and where to look for a variety of birds. Alice gives full instruction on lenses, focus, camera settings and manual modes to maximize your success in capturing clear, beautiful images. Class requires registration and a $20.00 fee. October 25th 5:00 PM                     Birding 101 Adults: Birds are beginning their fall migrations. Learn the best tools for becoming a birder. Program includes and introduction to binoculars, birds guides and other resources to help you become better at making a correct ID. Free program, all materials provided for class by Center. October 27th 8:30 AM                    Beginning Birding Hike: Join Linda of Hernando Audubon Society for a guided hike to find this seasons feathered migrants at Chinsegut. Linda is an avid birder and all levels of experience are welcome to join. Program starts with a short observation session at well stocked feeders then a walk to the viewing blind to look for ducks and other water birds. No need to register. No binoculars? No worries, borrow them from Chinsegut. Bird guides also available for loan.

October 27th 6:00 PM                    Creepy Crawly Critters & Craft: Join us for a program dedicated to things that creep, crawl and slither in celebration of Halloween. Ages 8+ with a craft to create a lantern jar with bugs, spider or snake inside. These lanterns make great spooky decorations or night lights. During craft and after we will take some time to venture outdoors to see some critters that call Chinsegut home. This program has a 10$ fee per lantern project. October 28th 10:00 AM                  Chinsegut Geology Tour: Retired professional geologist and longtime Center volunteer Mike Kelley will lead a guided walk and talk about the formation of lands on and around Chinsegut WEA. Program include a short presentation on Florida rock and soil layers prior to hike. No registration required for this program. Recommended for ages 10+.

October 28th 1:00 PM                    Animal Underground: Gopher tortoises are taking a break for the fall and becoming less active. During this program we will offer a unique opportunity to take a live look into the home of some gopher tortoises around Chinsegut. No registration required.

October 31st 10:00 AM                  Wicked Trees in black and white: Explore the twisted side of nature by photographing some gnarly tress at Chinsegut. This evet includes a fun Halloween themed social in addition to instruction and guided photography hike. Registration and a fee required. Visit for details or to register.
