Chinsegut Conservation Center September 2018 Programs

Chinsegut Conservation Center is open to the public from 8 AM until 2 PM Fridays and Saturdays and other times for scheduled programs or by appointment. Educators and organized groups can book programs year-round based on staff and volunteer availability.

The Center hosts many wildlife education programs and hikes throughout the year. Fun educational programs connect visitors with biologists and wildlife experts to explore and become familiar with Florida’s unique and sensitive natural areas. Located 6 miles north of Brooksville, Chinsegut Conservation Center Tract covers 408 of the 850 acres comprising Chinsegut Wildlife and Environmental Area (WEA). September 2018 programs are below:

Beginners Archery – Sept 1st 10:00 AM

Ages 10+ can stop in to learn the basics of archery. This two-hour class will take you through how to hold and handle bows and give you time to enjoy target archery. Scales and Tails for ages 5-8 – Sept 5th 10:30 AM

This program is for home schooled children in their elementary years. Children can learn about and see live reptiles and amphibians. Please let us know you’re coming at (352) 754-6722. 1.5 Hour Program

Buyer Beware; commonly sold invasive plants – Sept 7th 10:00 AM

Learn how to make good choices and choose environmentally friendly plants at the plant center. This is a free program, no need to register. 1 Hour Program

Archery 3-D Course – Sept 8th 9:00 AM

Chinsegut volunteers from a local archery group are hosting monthly 3-D target shooting opportunities for the public. You must have your own equipment to participate. Fees are requested to help us maintain equipment and provide    new exciting archery opportunities for the future. Fees: 12 and under are free, ages 13-16 5$, adults 10$ or 25$ maximum per family. Introduction to Nature Photography – Sept 9th 10:00 AM

Professional photographer and nature lover Alice Herden of Green-fly Media offers a monthly opportunity to learn more about your DSLR camera and getting great shots outdoors. Alice has an amazing nature portfolio and lots of opportunities for photographers of all levels to join her in the field. Registration and a $20.00 fee required. HS Series ages 10-13; Formation of Florida – Sept 13th 10:30 AM

Our annual classes for students 10-13 are returning this year! Sign-up for the classes you would like to attend by calling the Center at (352) 754-6722. This first class covers the formation of Florida and how that has influenced our wildlife and forests. 2.5 Hour Program

Snakes Alive: Herps and FL Nature Trackers – Sept 14th 10:00 AM

Florida Nature Trackers is a great for all ages app that allows you to photograph living things at home or in the woods and find out what they are while contributing to wildlife science. During this program you will learn about Nature Trackers and meet some slimy and scaly critters before taking a walk to look for others in their natural environment. Ages 8+ please due to duration of hiking/time outdoors. No need to register. 2.5 Hour Program

Children in the WILD; Birds – Sept 15th 2:00 PM

Register children ages 5-9 to attend our fun ‘about birds’ program which allows kids to explore the many varieties of bird through activities and games. This is a free program. Register at MyFWC.com/Chinsegut or (352) 754-6722. 1 Hour Program

Night Hike; Moonlight Mysteries – Sept 21st 7:00 PM

As the evenings cool a variety of wildlife may be on the move. Take a moonlit stroll at Chinsegut and learn fact and fiction about animal responses to moon phases. This program is for ages 16+ please register at MyFWC.com or (352) 754-6722. 2 Hour Program

Birding 101 – Sept 22nd 10:00 AM

This is a great opportunity for those who are interested in becoming birders to get the scoop on what you need and where to go. Learn how to tell birds apart and to get started learning before the fall migration. Please register for this free program online or by calling (352) 754-6722. 2.5 Hour Program

Walking Sticks; Janet Butterfield Brooks Preserve – Sept 29th 8:00 AM

This monthly hiking club meets at a variety of locations year-round. Janet Butterfield is a Preserve that not open to public access, so this is a rare opportunity to visit. Learn about sandhill environments and look for some of the elusive animals staking out a life in the high pines. Register by calling (352) 754-6722. Space is limited. 2 Hour Program
