Christmas for the Children in Homosassa
Here in Old Homosassa we have a new Christmas tradition starting this year.
Every year the Homosassa Civic Club holds a “Children’s Christmas Outreach”. Festival proceeds and donations are used to purchase Christmas gifts for children of families in need. The Homosassa Elementary School gives the civic club the names of the children along with their wish list. The list includes all of the children in the family–not just the students that attend the school. The presents are purchased, wrapped and secretly given to the parent/guardian for Santa to put under the tree. Some of these children would not receive a gift from Santa otherwise. Last year over 20 children received presents.
Meanwhile, The Old Mill Tavern makes a similar effort. Supported by the owners, employees and customers, the Old Mill also requests names of children from the school. Their families go on an Angel Tree every year and customers pick an angel. What the customer does not purchase from the wish list, the Old Mill does from money raised in fund raisers and from customers. In 2016, the Old Mill provided gifts to over 50 children.
This year the Homosassa Civic Club, the Old Mill Tavern, and the Homosassa Rotary have joined forces. The Old Mill Tavern requested all of the children from the Homosassa Elementary School and the families were put on the Angel Tree in their dining area–more than 30 families. Volunteers from all three groups will be hitting the local stores then wrapping, storing, and distributing.
This year all 91 children that were on the tree were adopted by customers!
And there will be a party!
Every child in the Homosassa area may attend the party–not just the children on the Angel Tree. They will have an opportunity to visit with Mr. and Mrs. Claus and Santa will have a gift for each one. Craft time and snacks will also be included.
Every community has needy children. We are very fortunate to also have people with big hearts that are in our community to make sure these kids have a wonderful Christmas!
