Citrus County Animal Services Volunteers Create Christmas Magic with Toy Drive

Each year, the Citrus County Foundation for Animal Protection (CCFAP) hosts a Christmas toy drive to ensure the dogs and cats at Citrus County Animal Services (CCAS) have toys in their kennels and in the play yards. The community is invited to join them in helping shelter animals know they are not forgotten about this holiday season.

“Most have known happy holidays, loving families, plenty of toys, and delicious foods,” said Wanda Moak, CCFAP president. “As they sit in the animal shelter alone this year, CCFAP wants to give them an abundance of great toys to occupy their minds and give them a little comfort.”

CCAS’ year-round Enrichment Program alleviates stress and provides the animals with toys and equipment that will stimulate their minds and provide opportunity for physical exercise. This keeps the animals physically and mentally healthy while they wait for adoption. Volunteers carefully shop for toys that the dogs and cats will enjoy but are also durable enough to withstand the number of pets that come through the shelter each year.

The highlight of the toy drive is the traditional Christmas morning “Toy Grab,” where the dogs come in and pick their own toys. “It is a phenomenal experience to see their reaction when they see all the toys laid out before them,” said Moak. “Once they realize that they can choose anything they want, they are so happy, and their tails never stop wagging. They get to take the toys of their choice back to the kennels and enjoy throughout their stay.”

There are many ways the community can help. The organization maintains an Amazon Wishlist, which community members can use to purchase shelter needs directly, located at www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3VZSCMFNWZRLQ. Durable toys can be purchased elsewhere and delivered to CCAS, 4030 S. Airport Road, Inverness, FL 34450. The community can donate online at www.CCFAP.net. There is also a Facebook Fundraiser online at www.facebook.com/donate/331752444953188/4300042393437494. Monetary donations will be used for toy shopping; CCFAP volunteers often have discounts that can reduce the cost and maximize the donation.

CCAS and CCFAP appreciate the community support in helping the cats and dogs have what they need for good quality of life, not just in the holiday season but year-round. Contact CCFAP@ccfap.net with any questions or call CCAS at (352) 746-8400.
