On Wednesday, April 20, 2022, Citrus County began constructing approximately 300 feet of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible concrete walkway at Fort Island Gulf Beach (located at 16000 W Fort Island Trail, Crystal River, FL 34429).

County Begins Construction on Fort Island Beach Accessibility Project

This project will affect some areas of parking on the north end of the beach. Construction is anticipated to be completed by Monday, May 2, 2022 (weather permitting).

200 feet of the concrete walkway will give ADA accessibility to the north end of the beach. An additional 100 feet of ADA accessible concrete walkway will provide access to the boardwalk. Once the walkways are completed, an accessible beach mat will be installed 100 feet towards the water. Beach mat installation is tentatively scheduled for the first week in May.

This project was approved by the Citrus County Board of County Commissioners at the regular Tuesday, February 8, 2022, meeting. Contingency funds were used to fund $13,653.51 in construction costs. The County also received $1,000 donation from nonprofit organization “Once Upon an Ocean.”  The organization will also be assisting Citrus County with walkway and beach mat maintenance for one year.
