Disc Golf Club surpasses donation expectations for Citrus United Basket

On January 14, 2017, the Nature Coast Disc Golf Club hosted its First Annual Ice Bowl disc golf tournament to raise funds for Citrus United Basket, a non-profit charitable organization that has helped local families meet temporary hardships since 1978.

While the club had planned to raise $500 and 100 pounds of grocery donations, expectations were more than doubled with a collection of 220 pounds of groceries and $2,503 in cash!

“Our cash donations were more than doubled because so many tournament winners re-donated their cash prizes to the cause,” explained tournament director Bobby Kirby.  Kirby added, “This is what disc golf people are like; always generous and ready to support those who are less fortunate.”

“We are so grateful for this generous support from the Nature Coast Disc Golf Club,” said Citrus United Basket Executive Director Kelly Selph.  “It was our first experience with this club. They are very professional in how they organize and manage a charity event, and we are looking forward to working with them in the future.”

The tournament, which drew 68 players from as far away as Jacksonville and Sarasota, was held at Floral Park, just south of Floral City.  Club board member Al Sampsell related, “The disc golf course at Floral Park is known far and wide.  It is a beautiful and popular venue that attracts players from out of county and out of state.”

The Nature Coast Disc Golf Club meets at Floral Park at 10 a.m. every Sunday and 6 p.m. every Thursday.  For more information or to join, call 727-331-1780 or find it on Facebook.
