Citrus County Animal Services (CCAS) hosted an “Empty the Shelters” event from Thursday, February 24 through Monday, February 28, 2022, in partnership with BISSELL Pet Foundation, who sponsored reduced adoption fees. The emergency adoption event aimed to find adoptive homes for pets often overlooked in animal shelters. During that time, 42 animals were adopted.

“Empty the Shelters” began in 2016 to encourage more families to choose adoption. Since its inception, BISSELL Pet Foundation has expanded the program to reach to organizations in 45 states and Canada, partnering with more than 400 shelters. As a result, more than 83,000 pets have been adopted through “Empty the Shelters” events. This was the first time that CCAS had participated in this partnership.

“It is amazing the Citrus County community step up and get so many pets out of the shelter and into loving homes,” said CCAS Director Colleen Yarbrough. “We are so thankful for our volunteers, who allowed us to be open on Sunday and Monday.” Volunteers for Citrus County Foundation for Animal Protection (CCFAP) also helped arrange an adoption event at Rural King in Crystal River. CCFAP provided a new Martingale collar for each of the six dogs adopted.

If you missed this event, don’t worry! CCAS still has plenty of amazing pets ready to join your family. For information on adopting a pet, visit www.citrusbocc.com or call CCAS at (352) 746-8400.
