Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is celebrating Arbor Day 2022 with a free longleaf pine tree seedling giveaway! Sway into the park on April 29 to pick up your tree from the Garden of the Springs (while supplies last), courtesy of the Florida Forest Service.
Native to the Southeastern United States, longleaf pines can reach over 100-feet in height and 2-feet in diameter. These stoic trees grow on well-drained sandy soil and can live for over 100 years. Forests that are filled with longleaf pines are rich in the variety of plant and animal species, with some relying on the pines for survival. Red-cockaded woodpeckers are dependent on the mature pine trees as they make their homes inside the pine’s thick trunk.
The trees are free on a first come first-serve basis, however regular admission is required to gain access to the park.
