Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ January Class/Workshop Schedule

The Hernando County Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ (FFL) program offers classes and workshops year-round to help residents learn how to save time, money and water when maintaining their lawns and gardens. The schedule of classes along with a short description of each is listed below.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ January Class/Workshop Schedule

Free Class: Ten Simple Steps to a Florida-Friendly Yard

Residents are invited to attend “Ten Simple Steps to a Florida-Friendly Yard” on Thursday, January 2, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. at the West Hernando Library located at 6335 Blackbird Avenue in Brooksville. Florida is unique when it comes to landscape care. Learn very simple steps to start having a successful and beautiful yard. This class will be presented by Florida-Friendly Landscaping Program Coordinator Lilly Browning. No registration is necessary.

Free Kid-Friendly Class: Inviting Critters into Your Yard

Residents are invited to attend “Inviting Critters into Your Yard” on Friday, January 3, 2020 at 10 a.m. at the Chinsegut Conservation Center located at 23212 Lake Lindsey Road in Brooksville. Great for home school families. Come on out and learn how the whole family can participate in bringing more wildlife to your yard. A short presentation by Florida-Friendly Landscaping and hands-on activities will be offered by Chinsegut Conservation staff and Volunteer Master Gardeners. No registration is necessary.

Free Class: Much Ado About Mulch

Residents are invited to attend “Much Ado About Mulch” on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at 10 a.m. at the UF/IFAS Extension Hernando County Office located at 16110 Aviation Loop Drive in Brooksville. There is much to learn about mulch! What is its purpose? What is the best kind to use? How much is too much? These things and more will be covered in this free class. This class will be presented by Florida-Friendly Landscaping Program Coordinator Lilly Browning. No registration is necessary.

Free Class: Florida-Friendly and Neighbor-Friendly

Residents are invited to attend “Florida-Friendly and Neighbor-Friendly” on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at 10 a.m. at the Spring Hill Branch Library located at 9220 Spring Hill Drive. It is possible to incorporate native and Florida-Friendly Landscaping into your deed-restricted landscape, pleasing yourself and your homeowner’s association. Learn tips on how to grow wild in a civilized community! This class will be presented by Florida-Friendly Landscaping Program Coordinator Lilly Browning. No registration is necessary.

Rain Barrel Workshop

Residents are invited to attend a Rain Barrel Workshop on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. at the East Hernando Library in Ridge Manor located at 6457 Windmere Road in Brooksville. This workshop will be presented by FFL Program Coordinator Lilly Browning. Rain barrels are $50 each. Attendance is mandatory to purchase a rain barrel; however, you may attend without purchasing one. Please make checks payable to HCUD and mail to Hernando County Utilities, 15365 Cortez Boulevard, Brooksville, FL 34613. Write “Rain Barrel Workshop “January 11” on the envelope. Checks will be the only form of payment accepted and must be received by January 10, 2020. Hernando County Utilities customers who attend the workshop and install a rain barrel at their home will receive a one-time $25 credit on their water bill. Please bring a vehicle that can accommodate a 55-gallon barrel. All sales final. Call (352) 540-6230 for more information.

Free Class: Best All-Around Plants for Hernando County

Residents are invited to attend “Best All-Around Plants for Hernando County” on Wednesday, January 22, 2020, at 10:30 a.m. at the Spring Hill Branch Library located at 9220 Spring Hill Drive. Tired of buying plants just to throw them on the compost pile? In this class we’ll cover plants that perform well in our area and how to find the right plant for the right place. This class will be presented by Florida-Friendly Landscaping Program Coordinator Lilly Browning. No registration is necessary.

Free Class: Florida-Friendly Fertilizing

Residents are invited to attend “Florida-Friendly Fertilizing” on Wednesday, January 29, 2020, at 10:30 a.m. at the Hernando County Utilities building located at 15365 Cortez Boulevard in Brooksville. This class will be presented by UF/IFAS Extension Hernando County Urban Horticulture Agent Dr. William Lester. Dr. Lester will walk participants through the Hernando County Fertilizer Ordinance and the best management practices when it comes to fertilizing their lawns and landscapes. No registration is necessary.
