Free classes and workshops offer Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ tips

The Hernando County Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ program offers classes and workshops year-round to help residents learn how to save time, money and water when maintaining their lawns and gardens. The schedule of classes and workshops along with a short description of each is listed below.

Free Class: Looking for Lawns in All the Wrong Places

Residents are invited to attend a free class, “Looking for Lawns in All the Wrong Places” on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at the Hernando County Utilities Building located at 15365 Cortez Boulevard in Brooksville at 10:30 a.m. This class will be presented by Florida Friendly Landscaping™ Program Coordinator Lilly Browning and focus on turf alternatives for problem areas. No registration is necessary.

Free Class: Much Ado About Mulch

Residents are invited to a free class, “Much Ado About Mulch” on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at the West Hernando Library located at 6335 Blackbird Avenue in Brooksville at 10:30 a.m. Learn what typed of mulches are recommended, how to avoid pitfalls, how to apply it properly and the benefits it can provide. This class will be presented by Florida Friendly Landscaping™ Program Coordinator Lilly Browning. Free class. No registration necessary.

Free Class: The Top Ten Things Newcomers Need to Know About Their Florida Yard

Residents are invited to a free class, “The Top Ten Things Newcomers Need to Know About Their Florida Yard” on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at the Spring Hill Branch Library located at 9220 Spring Hill Drive at 10:30 a.m. This class will be presented by Florida Friendly Landscaping™ Program Coordinator Lilly Browning. Spoiler alert! Number one is: Forget everything you ever knew about gardening elsewhere. To find out the rest, join us for this free class. No registration necessary.

Rain Barrel Workshop

Residents are invited to attend a Rain Barrel Workshop on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. The workshop will be held at the Hernando County Utilities Building (Former Tampa Bay Times Building) located at 15365 Cortez Boulevard in Brooksville. Florida-Friendly Landscaping Program Coordinator Lilly Browning will present the Rain Barrel Workshop.

Cost to attend is $50 per person. Pre-registration is required. Please send checks, written out to HCUD, to Hernando County Utilities located at 15365 Cortez Boulevard, Brooksville, FL 34613. Write “Rain Barrel Workshop April 25” on the envelope. Hernando County Utilities customers who attend the workshop and install a rain barrel at their home will receive at one-time credit on their water bill for $25. Please bring a vehicle that can accommodate a 55-gallon barrel. Attendance at a workshop is mandatory to purchase a rain barrel. All sales final.
