FREE virtual classes on Florida-Friendly Landscaping

The Hernando County Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ (FFL) program offers classes and workshops year-round to help residents learn how to save time, money, and water when maintaining their lawns and gardens. Residents are invited to participate in free, online learning through virtual, interactive classes for the month of August. These virtual classes will be presented by Florida-Friendly Landscaping Coordinator Lilly Browning.

The schedule of classes along with a short description of each is listed below. Residents can participate by following FFL on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/HernandoFFLProgram. A link to participate in the classes will be provided on the Facebook page. Videos will be available on Facebook after the class has been recorded.

Free Virtual Class: Nature-Friendly and Neighbor-Friendly: Growing Wild in a Civilized Community


Residents are invited to virtually attend “Nature-Friendly and Neighbor-Friendly: Growing Wild in a Civilized Community” on Wednesday, August 5, 2020, at 10 a.m. Participants will learn how to abide by the nine principles of Florida-Friendly Landscaping while also abiding by the rules of their Homeowner’s Association (HOA). You can have a beautiful yard that will be a haven for wildlife, conserve water resources, and keep you on the good side of your neighbors and your HOA.

Free Virtual Class: When Lawns Just Don’t Cut It


Residents are invited to virtually attend “When Lawns Just Don’t Cut It” on Wednesday, August 12, 2020, at 10 a.m. Do you have an area of your yard where turf just refuses to grow? Are you tired of the expense of maintaining a large lawn? In this class, alternatives to turf and how to reduce the turf areas in your yard and replace it with plants that are beautiful and sustainable will be discussed.

Free Virtual Class: 20 Things Newcomers Need to Know About Their Florida Yard – Part One

Residents are invited to virtually attend “20 Things Newcomers Need to Know About Their Florida Yard – Part One” on Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at 10 a.m. Whether you are brand new to Central Florida or have been here quite a while, there is something for everyone to learn in this informative class. Spoiler alert! Number one is: Forget everything you ever knew about gardening elsewhere! Enjoy part one of this two-part series.

Free Virtual Class: Saving Water and Money in Your Landscape

Residents are invited to virtually attend “Saving Water and Money in Your Landscape” on Friday, August 21, 2020 at 10 a.m. Don’t irrigate your money away! In this class, participants will discuss how much water their landscape actually needs, the problems with over-watering, and how to make some simple changes in their yard that will help save water and money.

Free Virtual Class: 20 Things Newcomers Need to Know About Their Florida Yard – Part Two

Residents are invited to virtually attend “20 Things Newcomers Need to Know About Their Florida Yard – Part Two” on Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at 10 a.m. Part two of a series. This class is for newcomers to Central Florida as well as those who have been here awhile. Learn tips and techniques to having a sustainable, beautiful Florida yard. In this class, we will dispel myths and learn how to have a Florida-Friendly oasis.
