The Hernando County Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ (FFL) program offers classes and workshops year-round to help residents learn how to save time, money, and water when maintaining their lawns and gardens.

FREE virtual classes on Florida-Friendly Landscaping™

Residents are invited to participate in free, online learning through virtual, interactive classes for the month of January. These virtual classes will be presented by Florida-Friendly Landscaping Coordinator Lilly Browning.

The schedule of classes along with a short description of each is listed below. Residents can participate by clicking the Zoom meeting link associated with the class they wish to attend at the time it is offered and entering in the meeting ID and passcode. Videos will be available on the Florida-Friendly Landscaping Facebook and the Hernando County Government YouTube Channel after the class has been recorded.

Free Virtual Class: Myths and Facts of Your Florida-Friendly Yard
Residents are invited to virtually attend “Myths and Facts of Your Florida-Friendly Yard” on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at 10 a.m. Sometimes it is hard to separate fact from fiction when it comes to caring for your Florida landscape. Join Lilly Browning and Dr. Bill Lester from Hernando County UF/IFAS Extension as they discuss commonly held misconceptions and falsehoods and replace them with research-based information so you can begin to understand your Florida yard.

Residents are invited to virtually attend “Checklist of a Florida-Friendly Certified Yard Part Two” on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at 10 a.m. Join Lilly Browning and Dr. Bill Lester as they discuss the Florida-Friendly Landscaping checklist for a Florida-Friendly certified yard. Right plant, right place, water efficiency, fertilize appropriately and mulch will be covered. Find out if your yard is officially Florida-Friendly or steps you have to take to get it there.

Residents are invited to virtually attend “Checklist of a Florida-Friendly Yard Part Three” on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at 10 a.m. Join Lilly Browning and Dr. Bill Lester as they discuss the Florida-Friendly Landscaping checklist for a certified Florida-Friendly yard. Attract wildlife, manage yard pests responsibly, recycle, prevent stormwater runoff and protect the waterfront will be covered. Find out if your yard is officially Florida-Friendly or steps you have to take to get it there.

Rain Barrel and Compost Bin Workshop  
Residents are invited to virtually attend a Rain Barrel and Compost Bin Workshop on Thursday, January 21, 2021 at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. If you are interested in attending a Rain Barrel Workshop and/or a Compost Bin Workshop, please email LillyB@HernandoCounty.us to register. Registration is required. Rain barrels are $50. A one-time water bill credit of $25 is available for customers of Hernando County Utilities for attending a workshop and taking a rain barrel home. To receive a free compost bin, you must be a resident of Hernando County. One bin per household. Rain barrel and compost bin pick up will be Saturday, January 23, 2021 between 9 and 10 a.m. at the Hernando County Master Gardener Nursery located at 19490 Oliver Street in Brooksville.

Residents are invited to virtually attend “Cut it Out! Proper Pruning Techniques in Your Florida-Friendly Yard” on Wednesday, January 27, 2021 at 10 a.m. Learn the proper steps to take in order to prune your trees, shrubs and landscape plants in a way to help them thrive and avoid trouble down the road from improper pruning practices.
