There will be plenty of strawberries to pick for the next 2 or 3 weeks and then it will be a hunt for the good ones.. The blueberries are starting, but this cold snap will stop ripening till we get back into the eighty’s. There should be plenty in a couple of weeks and berries will go into the middle of April. Blackberries are just starting to bloom so look for them the middle to end of May.
Jeff has been doing weekly planting of sweetcorn since the end of February; watermelon plants every other week since the first of March; green beans have been planted and have sprouted. Last week yellow neck squash and zucchini seeds were planted.
Still available are mustard and collard greens. kale, swiss chard, red and green cabbage, some broccoli and lettuce. We have been buying some produce from the Plant City Farmer’s Market – tomatoes, green beans, sweet potatoes, onions, red potatoes, bananas, etc.
New for this spring is a special u-pick area for sunflowers and another for zinnias. It will be a few weeks before they are up and blooming.
There are plenty of eggs each week – brown, white, blue and green. Remember to bring a couple of slices of bread to feed the chickens at Grandma’s Chicken Ranch. And, there is plenty of local honey.
Happy Spring, Joan Casey
