Mid Florida Community Services, Inc’s., Head Start/Early Head Start program is one of over 120 organizations nationally to receive funding from No Kid Hungry to address food insecurity being experienced by children under the age of six.

Mid Florida Community Services, Inc., Head Start/Early Head Start Program Receives Grant Award from No Kid Hungry

Through no-cost early learning programs that promote school readiness of children ages six weeks to five years of age from income-eligible families, Mid Florida Community Services, Inc’s. (MFCS), Head Start/Early Head Start (HS/EHS) program supports the development of the whole child. MFCS HS/EHS is committed to providing a full range of services in our program including: education, inclusion, and health and advocacy services that meet any identified needs.

“The nutritional needs of the children and families we serve remains a top focus,” said MFCS HS/EHS Director of Early Learning Programs Heidi Rand. “Food insecurity has been a major concern amongst those we serve since March 2020; and, we have had the opportunity to identify out-of-the-box ways to meet those basic, essential needs.  This funding will help us expand and continue those efforts.”

MFCS already provides a USDA-approved breakfast and lunch for each HS/EHS child in attendance Monday through Friday, when classes are in session.  This grant will allow MFCS to identify over 200 families suffering from food insecurities and provide them with weekend food backpacks for their child. 

Head Start, serving children ages three to five years of age, is provided by MFCS in Hernando, Sumter, and Volusia Counties.  Early Head Start, serving children age six weeks to three years, is provided in Hernando and Volusia Counties.  Families who are interested in learning more about either of these programs can do so online at www.MidFloridaHeadStart.com, or by calling 1-888-227-0010.
