Tiffany Howland, teacher at D.S. Parrott Middle School (DSPMS) and Hernando School District 2017 Teacher of the Year, was presented with the Governor’s Shine Award Thursday, February 8, 2018 by Governor Rick Scott.

The ceremony was held at the Florida State Fairgrounds, and Howland, who teaches 8th grade Algebra and Agriculture Science at DSPM, was at home walking through the animal barns on her way to the more formal Shine Award presentation.

“Agriculture education is a true passion for me and I appreciated hearing from the Commissioner of Agriculture and the Governor who both spoke highly of their support for Florida Agriculture,” Howland said.

It was even more special when she learned February 8 was “Heroes Day” at the State Fair – a day intended to honor first responders. Prior to joining HCSD, Howland was an EMT and paramedic in Citrus County and also taught high school students about the field of emergency medical service as a leader in the Explorer’s Program.

“This was truly an amazing day. I felt completely proud,” Howland said.
