Historic Duval Metz House to open for Alzheimer’s Walk

The historic Duval Metz House, thought to be the oldest residential structure in Citrus County, will be open for visitation at Citrus County Walk Aware for Alzheimer’s in Floral City on October 19, 2019.

Built in 1860, the Duval House was in a state of disrepair when the Duval Preservation Trust, Inc. was formed in 2012 by members of the Floral City Heritage Council to undertake its protection and restoration.  The house was officially re-opened in June, 2018, when it was selected for a Florida Historical Marker.  However, with its interior still under renovation, the Duval House is opened to the public only on special occasions.

Debbie Selsavage, President of Coping with Dementia LLC, which is the principal sponsor and organizer of the annual walk to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Family Organization, states, “We are thrilled that Duval House will open for the education and entertainment of our walkers.  Our Walk, begun in 2017, has always focused on and benefited from the rich historical quality of Floral City and the peaceful setting of its beautiful Avenue of Oaks.”

Selsavage reports that in addition to the open house, exhibits depicting the activities and artifacts of daily living during the late 19th-century will be featured on the expansive lawn of Duval House.  She says, “These exhibits, and many other features of the Walk, are consistent with our desire to invite our walkers and their families to return to beautiful Floral City, especially during its annual Heritage Days on December 6 and 7, 2019.”
