March brings in new opportunities for fish on the Big Bend with some pelagics and some homesteaders. On the pelagic side look for Spanish mackerel and bluefish to move through in the 6-to-12-foot range. When I target these fish, I use a long shank hook instead of wire leader because of the fish’s sharp eyesight. A long shank hook will prevent most cut offs when fishing with live bait, but with a trolled spoon a trace of wire is best. Both fish are table fare, and I recommend eating them fresh.

Smoked mackerel make a great fish spread. 

Snook are legal to take this month with a slot size of 28″ to 33″, one per angler and 0 captains take. I have seen fish all over the place from docks in the rivers all the way out to the furthest western keys. Some of the most concentrated spots of snook I’ve found this week have been near large creek mouths with deep water. One bait that I’ve used in the past especially in clear water is a mud minnow.

Local bait houses are starting to sell them and they are a hardy bait. They resemble a small mullet, a bait that snook like. A bucket with local water will keep them alive all day. Other proven early spring baits for snook are the MirrOlure, MirrOdine, or the D.O.A. 5.5 305 jerk bait. 

This weekend will be early morning or late evening incoming tides.
