Homosassa Inshore Fishing Report with Captain Toney

By Captain William Toney Posted on February 1, 2017

After some cool weather the river was 58 degrees today and Gulf was a cold 59. The bite was good on sheepshead around the Foul Area, but the incoming tide did make a difference between feeding grass porgy’s or catching the target species.

The week is going to moderate with warmer temperatures and this should help the inshore bite.

After moving rock to rock in 8 to 12 feet of water we caught many different species from spanish mackerel , blow fish and giant black drum. The one particular rock with the large black drum had a yellow sand bottom all the way around it.  I had noticed a “mud” near the area and saw no porpoise so this time of year is when large black drum will congregate on the shallow rocks or sometimes near the St. Martins Keys. We did land two on ten pound test that bottomed out my 30lb. Boga Grip!

The sheephead bite was good using live shrimp near the rocks and trout fishing has been good on some of the near shore rocks or on the points when the tide covers the rocks.

Red fishing can be hit or miss according to the tides and temperature.

This weekends tides will be incoming at dark in the morning or dark in the evening.
