If you have been looking for a place to “jam”, this is the post for you!
I play the banjo. I know, crazy right? Really crazy because I’ve never been a big fan of bluegrass! And still wonder why I bought a banjo. (Possibly the influence of Mumford & Sons, Kermit the Frog, and Steve Martin rather than Earl Scruggs)
I started my banjo adventure by taking lessons. Some days that was good–some days not so good! I was really becoming frustrated with that whole learning process. And that’s when I came across an article in the local newspaper about an “acoustic meetup” at the Coastal Region Library in Crystal River.
Paula Bateman was new to the area and couldn’t find any local musicians to play with so decided to start her own acoustic meetup. That was four years ago and the meetup has been getting bigger and better every month!
The meetups are the first and third Monday of each month. The library is at 8619 W Crystal St, Crystal River, FL. All levels of acoustic players are welcome along with singers. We even have a small audience!
Because of the popularity of the Crystal River group, Mick Williams recently started a jam at the Homosassa Library which is at 4100 S Grandmarch Ave, Homosassa, FL. While he doesn’t have a regular schedule yet, you can check on the calendar on the Library’s website for the “Acoustic Jam Session”.
And now we are looking into a third option on the west side! The Homosassa Civic Club has offered a practice room on its campus for a jam group. Just need to get it organized! If you are interested in coming to a jam session or want more information on any of the acoustic groups, please email HomosassaCivicClub @gmail.com.
