Land O’Lakes Sinkhole Update – August 4

*Due to safety concerns with heavy construction equipment on site, Ocean Pines Drive (on both sides of the sinkhole) is closed to all traffic, except residential, construction and emergency vehicles.  This is a construction site; access and line of sight are limited.

SINKHOLE ACTIVITY

*10 foot wide by 80 foot long section, on the west side of the sinkhole, closest to the Lake Saxon collapsed sometime overnight

*The contractor does expect some of the edges of the sinkhole to collapse and that is why fill will be brought in to help stabilize the banks

*Equipment has been moved away from the western edge as a safety precaution

*Emergency Management notified homeowners that there was some activity overnight

*Work will go on today to stabilize the bank of the sinkhole so debris removal can resume

*There will be more testing with ground penetrating radar before works resumes

CLEANUP OF SINKHOLE:

Work can be delayed at any time depending on weather and/or scene safety:

  • Wednesday, 8/2
    • Contractor Ceres Environmental Services brought heavy equipment to the site
    • Emergency Management moved the perimeter fence back another 100 feet from the sinkhole to make room for the cleanup equipment
    • Power was disconnected at two vacant homes as a safety precaution, so heavy equipment can safely pass under overhead electrical lines
  • Thursday, 8/3
    • Contractor crews are using small barges to remove floating debris from the sinkhole
    • Work is underway at roadway access points to the sinkhole to build stable platforms for heavy equipment to continue debris collection
    • Demolition work could begin on the remainder of the structure at 21825 Ocean Pines Drive
  • Friday, 8/4
  • Cleanup efforts are expected to be in full swing
  • Pumping could begin to remove water from sinkhole
  • Saturday & Sunday, 8/5, 8/6
    • Ceres will continue work through the weekend

This is a construction site and safety is a top priority.  Please obey all posted signs.

 HELP FOR SINKHOLE VICTIMS:

  • The United Way of Pasco County has over $27,000.00 in the Sinkhole Relief fund

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

Several families were affected, some losing everything and others just losing a place to live (yes, that’s a big deal, think about it) for an unknown amount of time. You can help by making a donation through the United Way of Pasco County. 100% of proceeds will go to the families. Also, gift cards are being collected at several Land O’Lakes businesses including Florida Luxury Realty.
