Citrus County Board of County Commissioners approved a seven-year lease agreement with Earth Networks for a Lightning Detection Alert System, which includes nine locations, for a total annual cost of $15,575.00.  The installation of computerized units in identified parks was completed in May 2020.

Citrus County Parks completes installation of Lightning Detection Alert System

The lightning detection and alert system is automated and customizable by Parks and Recreation staff with capabilities to define a set of parameters for alerts and all-clear notifications, hours of operations, coverage area, and distance of approaching severe weather for identified County parks, athletic facilities, and other outdoor venues.

The system includes both horn units and strobe lights with 360 degrees of audible and visual coverage to notify citizens on-site and in the area.  E-mail alerts are also sent to identify County staff with updates on both lightning strikes and severe weather.
