May 2022 Canning Classes

Sign up as classes fill quickly for some of these.

What you get when you pay for a class:

1) Knowledge! You get to learn how to make a new recipe from scratch. You get to learn how to can that recipe. You get to learn how to utilize that canned product into a meal for you and/or your family.

2) You get a snack or meal, depending on what the class is! This is so you can taste what you made and to get one idea of how to use use that jar.

3) You get to meet new people and make new friends! Lots of people have made new and lasting friendships from our classes.

4) By purchasing a class, you are also supporting the Cannery! Every class helps keep our doors open by helping us pay our bills. We are a non-profit Organization and rely on donations, classes, grants, Cannery store purchases and Volunteers to keep us up and running.

5) You get to shop in our Cannery store and check out what local small businesses have to offer while waiting for your jars to process. Every purchase helps a local small business and helps support the Cannery!

6) You always go home with 1 jar of what you made that day, a recipe to make it again on your own and the hands on experience!

May Introduction to Canning Series 

Description: This is a four-week hands-on preservation course that involves both water bath and pressure canning.

The course will focus on safe canning practices including sterilization, how to properly fill jars, how to ensure a proper seal, and how to process using both methods.

Every week you will go home with a jar of what was made in class!

We also always taste what is made so you have an idea of what to expect.

Please bring a small box to transport your jar home in.

Week 1 – Water Bath Canning – Salsa

Tuesday May 3, 2022
5 pm to 8 pm

In this class we will learn how to water bath can Salsa!

Week 2 – Water Bath Canning – Jam or Jelly (TBA)

Tuesday May 10, 2022
5 pm to 8 pm

In this class we will be learning to make an in season Fruit Jam or a jelly. The jam will be announced as we get closer to the class so we can see what the local farmers will have available.

Week 3 – Pressure Canning Vegetables

Tuesday May 17, 2022
5 pm to 8 pm

In this class we will be pressure canning in season Vegetables.

We will discuss how the vegetables you use will determine the time needed for processing. We will also make cornbread from scratch.

Week 4 – Pressure Canning Recipes – Chicken Pot Pie

Tuesday May 24, 2022
5 pm to 8 pm

In the final class for the course we will make Chicken Pot Pie Starter. This is a great simple recipe that you can grab right off the shelf, heat up and eat out of the jar or make a quick pot pie with! We will also learn how to make the pie crust in class.

All classes are non-refundable.

Wing Sauce

Date: Wednesday May 4, 2022
Time: 11 am to 2 pm
Teacher: Nancy

Description: In this class we will make and can chicken wing sauce. All Students will go home with a jar of product made in class.

This is a hands-on class.

Price: $35 per person

Mustards and Ketchup

Date: Saturday May 7, 2022
Time: 10:30 am to 4:30 pm
Teachers: Janet and Nancy

Description: Mustards are surprisingly easy to make and delicious! You may never go back to store bought again !! Ketchup may take a longer time to prepare but it is so worth it!

This ketchup is tastier than store bought and lower in sugar and salt.

All Students will go home with a jar of each product made in class.

This is a hands-on class.

Price: $60 per person

Zucchini Bread Jam

Date: Wednesday May 11, 2022

Description: Zucchini Bread Jam is an unusual jam that has the flavor of classic Zucchini Bread but in the form of a spreadable jam!

All Students will go home with a jar of product made in class.

This is a hands-on class.

Bourbon Chicken

Date: Saturday May 14, 2022
Time: 11 am to 2 pm

Description: Bourbon Chicken is juicy, tender chicken cut into pieces simmered in a sweet, brown sugar glaze that will melt in your mouth. Rich in flavor and served over rice for a complete meal!

In this class you will learn how to prepare and can bourbon chicken.

All Students will go home with a jar of product made in class.

Cinnamon Watermelon Rind Pickles

Date: Thursday May 19 and Friday May 20
Time: Thursday class will be from 11 am to 12 :30 pm
Friday Class will be from 11 am to 2 pm
Teacher: Janet

Description: Make the most of your watermelon! After eating the juicy red watermelon, use the peeled rind to make this sweet cinnamon-flavored pickle – perfect for summertime picnics and bbq’s.

This is a two (2) day class.

On day 1 we will prepare the watermelon rinds and allow them to soak overnight. On day 2 we will finish them off and use the water bath method to preserve the rind pickles.

All Students will go home with a jar of product made in class.

This is a hands-on class.

Blackberry Jam
