The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park and the Friends of Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park will be holding a ribbon cutting to celebrate the Grand Opening of the park’s new Deer Boardwalk on Friday, February 17, 2017 at 2:00 pm.
This has been a major undertaking of the Friends of Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park who raised $100,000 to complete this project. Joe Dube, past president of the Friends of Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, says “It was always my goal to get the people to the deer.”
Joe Dube served two terms as president of the park’s Citizen Support Organization and during that time led the group in presenting many community events, accomplishing many projects and fulfilling many needs for the park. He has just recently stepped down as president and turned over the reins to then vice president Vicky Iozzia. The completed project includes a gate and walkway leading to a covered viewing pavilion where visitors have an unobstructed view of the Key deer and White-tailed deer from inside their habitat. This will be ideal for photographers and nature study. Construction of the project started in August 2016.
