New location means new lives for adoptable dogs

Sometimes, a little change of scenery can make a big difference. It already has for the first three dogs to be adopted through an innovative new partnership between the Hillsborough County and Hernando County public pet shelters.

The Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center and Hernando County Animal Services agreed recently to each “swap’’ three dogs from their shelter populations. All the dogs had been in their respective shelters for weeks, with no immediate prospects for adoption.

Moving the dogs to a new location would expose them to a new audience and, hopefully, lead to successful adoptions. If the dogs still can’t find a home, they will be returned to their original shelters. The agreement between Hillsborough and Hernando prohibits either of the shelters from euthanizing a dog sent over from the other county.

As part of the pilot program, the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center last week sent Ned, Sadie Pearl and Bam Bam to Hernando County Animal Services and received Chico, Spuds, and Mindy in return.

So far, Ned, Sadie Pearl and Spuds have been adopted; the other three dogs are still waiting for the right match and are available for adoption.
