Better World Books reuses books, donates to Friends of the Library

Pasco County Libraries is pleased to announce its partnership with Better World Books has resulted in more than $25,000 in donations to Friends of the Pasco County Library System!

Pasco County Libraries has been partnering with Better World Books since 2005 as an outlet to donate books that are no longer needed in the collection. Books are removed for several reasons – mainly for deteriorating condition or to make way for newer volumes. Better World Books then donates a percentage of each sale to the Friends of the Pasco County Library System, allowing them to fund a wide range of programs and events for the community.

Many of the books are shipped directly to Better World Books, based in Mishawaka, Indiana, and are sold through the company’s online bookstore. Books that are not sold are donated to various charities around the world that promote literacy in adults and children. Books in poor condition, that are not suitable for reuse, are recycled.

“Literacy is a critical mission of the Library,” said Public Communications Specialist Bob Harrison. “We are pleased that unneeded books get a second life by helping children and adults discover the joy of reading.”

An additional benefit of partnering with Better World Books is the positive environmental impact that comes from reusing and recycling books. Over the past twelve (12) years, Pasco County Libraries has shipped 85,961 books, equaling 117,657 pounds to Better World Books.

This represents 1,386 trees and 763,413 gallons of water saved. In addition, this cut back on 183,112 pounds of greenhouse gases and 190 cubic yards of landfill space.
