Caring neighbors make the 2017 Great American Cleanup a great success!

Pasco County residents came out in droves to take part in the Great American Cleanup on Saturday March 11, 2017.  Hundreds of volunteers helped pick up trash throughout Pasco County in various locations such as Crystal Springs Preserve, Lacoochee, Dade City, Hudson, New Port Richey, Werner-Boyce Salt Springs Park in Port Richey and Anclote Gulf Park in Holiday.  Many groups walked around picking up trash and some volunteers used boats.

This year 516 volunteers picked up 28.13 tons of trash or 56,260 pounds of litter.  Volunteers also picked up tires, car parts and mattresses.  “I helped with the cleanups in some environmentally-sensitive areas,” said Kristen King, Keep Pasco Beautiful Coordinator.  “It was nice to see volunteers pulling out boxes of tile and other remodeling supplies that people had dumped in the mangroves.  And it was amazing and encouraging to see the children who were volunteering care so much about our world and the effect littering has on our environment.”

The Great American Cleanup is hosted by Keep Pasco Beautiful and funded through corporate donations.  The success of the event is due to the collaboration and assistance of Pasco County departments such Recycling and Education; Road and Bridge; Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources; and Utilities Environmental Services.
