Scavenger Hunt with the Old Homosassa Heritage Council

I’ve found something fun for you to do and you’ll be helping to preserve the heritage of Old Homosassa! Win-Win, right?

The Old Homosassa Heritage Council  (OHHC) is sponsoring an “amazing race” style scavenger hunt.  For a $25 donation you receive a high quality t-shirt or poster with artwork created by local Old Homosassa artist and gallery owner, Gil Watson.  Plus entry into the hunt, of course!

And who is OHHC and what do they do and why should you care?

Three years ago a group of concerned residents formed a non-profit organization to save the Old Homosassa Water Tower, an historical landmark.  It became their mission to educate, inspire, and strengthen the community by preserving and sharing the history of Old Homosassa for present and future generations.

Through numerous fund-raisers and donations, over $20,000 has already been raised and with that money the tower was repaired. But $45,000 is still needed to do the painting, landscaping, and yearly maintenance. Raising money is still a big priority!

Which brings us to the “Amazing Race” Style Scavenger Hunt.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the first three finishers.  First place $300, second place $200, and third place $100.  In addition, finishers that do not place will be entered into a drawing to win one of seven gift baskets.

And how does the scavenger hunt work?

Eleven riddles will be posted periodically on OHHC’s Facebook page, on the OHHC website, in the Citrus County Chronicle and announced on local radio stations, Citrus 95.3, Fox 96.7 and Hits 106.  Solve the riddle, go to the location, get your clue.  The hunt ends on June 11th.

Registration is ongoing until May 20th and there are four places to register:  Triton Lumber, Atlas Insurance Services, Village Cadillac-Toyota Parts Department, and Watson’s Art Gallery.

OHHC held a kickoff party on Sunday, April 23rd, at Village Cadillac-Toyota in Homosassa–one of the sponsors of the hunt.

Pam Phelps explains the registration, rules, and the riddles.

The first riddle is “You will find your first clue near the Old Cane Crusher. If your wife wants some wings, well, there’s no need to rush her”. There was also a little hint on the artwork!

Looks like a fun group, right? You still have time to join in on the hunt plus help preserve the history of Old Homosassa.  Any questions? Email ohheritagec@gmail.com!
