What is a Registered Investment Advisor?
A registered investment advisor is a firm who advises individuals on investments and manages their portfolios. RIAs have a fiduciary duty to their clients, which means that they have a fundamental and legal obligation to provide investment advice that always acts in their clients’ best interest. As the first word of their title indicates, registered investment advisors are required to register either with the Security & Exchange Commission (SEC) or state security administrators, as well as passing a rigorous financial securities and investments exam.
Most investment advisors are paid a flat fee or percentage of assets under management to advise clients of securities and/or manage portfolios with no commissions or hidden incentives. This contrasts with brokers who are paid commission to execute trades or buy and sell assets for clients.
