September Canning Classes

What you get when you pay for a class:

1) Knowledge! You get to learn how to make a new recipe from scratch. You get to learn how to can that recipe. You get to learn how to utilize that canned product into a meal for you and/or your family.

2) You get a snack or meal, depending on what the class is! This is so you can taste what you made and to get one idea of how to use use that jar.

3) You get to meet new people and make new friends! Lots of people have made new and lasting friendships from our classes.

4) By purchasing a class, you are also supporting the Cannery! Every class helps keep our doors open by helping us pay our bills. We are a non-profit Organization and rely on donations, classes, grants, Cannery store purchases and Volunteers to keep us up and running.

5) You get to shop in our Cannery store and check out what local small businesses have to offer while waiting for your jars to process. Every purchase helps a local small business and helps support the Cannery!

6) You always go home with 1 jar of what you made that day, a recipe to make it again on your own and the hands on experience!

September Introduction to Canning 4 Week Series

This is a four-week hands-on preservation course that involves both water bath and pressure canning. The course will focus on safe canning practices including sterilization, how to properly fill jars, how to ensure a proper seal, and how to process using both methods.

Everyone will go home each week with a jar of what is made in class. We also always taste what is made so you have an idea of what to expect.

Please bring a small box to transport your jar home in.

Week 1 – Water Bath Canning – Sweet Cucumber Relish

Sunday September 4, 2022

3 pm to 6 pm

  In this class you will learn how to make a sweet cucumber relish. This relish is great for using on hot dogs and sausages, Salmon, deviled eggs and you can add it to tuna, chicken or even ham salad.

Week 2 – Water Bath Canning – Jam or Jelly (TBA)

Sunday September 11, 2022

3 pm to 6 pm

In this class we will be learning to make an in season Fruit Jam or a jelly.

The jam will be announced as we get closer to the class so we can see what the local farmers will have available.

Week 3 – Pressure Canning Vegetables – Stuffed Pepper Soup (no Meat)

Sunday September 18, 2022

3 pm to 6 pm

This class we will be pressure canning in season Vegetables. We will discuss how the vegetables you use will determine the time needed for processing.

In this class you will learn how to make from scratch Stuffed Pepper Soup and pressure can it.

When ready to consume at home, you can put over rice or pasta and add cheese to the top!

Week 4 – Pressure Canning Recipes – Beef Stew

Sunday September 25, 2022

3 pm to 6 pm

In the final class for the course we will make Beef Stew. Nice and easy meal in a jar that you can just heat and eat!!

Kentucky Bar Fight Jam

Date: Thursday September 1, 2022

Time: 10 am to 1 pm

Teacher: Janet

Description: A sweet and spicy jam made with blackberries, blueberries, jalapenos and bourbon. All Students will go home with a jar of product made in class. This is a hands-on class.

Chow Chow

Date: Thursday September 8, 2022

Time: 5 pm to 8 pm

Description: In this recipe you will learn how to make and can this old Southern favorite. Chow Chow relish is a great topping for hot dogs, burgers, turkey sandwiches, all kinds of great things. All Students will go home with a jar of product made in class. This is a hands-on class.

Meals in a Jar – Hearty Chili

Date: Saturday September 10, 2022

Description: Warm up the cool months with this hearty chunky chili. All Students will go home with a jar of product made in class. This is a hands-on class.

Black Forest Macaroon Conserv

Date: Sunday September 11, 2022

Time: 10 am to 1 pm

Description: With a twist of cocoa, the added touch of sweet cherries and a dash of brandy, this recipe is sure to please and tantalize the taste buds. All Students will go home with a jar of product made in class. This is a hands-on class.

Cowboy Candy

Date: Thursday September 8, 2022

Description: We will make cowboy candy- this is candied jalapeño!! It’s hot and sweet Perfect for a sandwich, salad or on a cracker with cheese. All Students will go home with a jar of product made in class. This is a hands-on class.

Meal in a Jar – Chicken Marsala

Date: Saturday September 17, 2022

Time: 10 am to 1 pm

Description: In this class you will learn to can Chicken Marsala. Chicken Marsala is a delicious way to prepare chicken and perfect because of its “base” of using chicken stock and adding thickener, cream or sour cream just before serving after reheating the jars contents. All Students will go home with a jar of product made in class. This is a hands-on class.

Cubed Sweet Potatoes

Date: Thursday September 22, 2022

Time: 5 pm to 8 pm

Description: As many gardeners know, September and November are a great time to pull your sweet potatoes and preserve them. In this Class, we will prepare and pressure can cubed sweet potatoes. We will also make a sweet potato pie to eat in class All Students will go home with a jar of product made in class. This is a hands-on class.

Meal in a Jar – Beef Stroganoff

Date: Saturday September 24, 2022

Time: 10 am to 1 pm

Description: In this class, you will learn how to prepare and pressure can Beef Stroganoff. Just open the jar. heat up, add sour cream and serve over rice or noodles. Instant meal!!! All Students will go home with a jar of product made in class. This is a hands-on class.

Honey Ginger Carrots

Description: Bourbon Chicken is juicy, tender chicken cut into pieces simmered in a sweet, brown sugar glaze that will melt in your mouth. Rich in flavor and served over rice for a complete meal! In this class you will learn how to prepare and can bourbon chicken. All Students will go home with a jar of product made in class. This is a hands-on class.
