Sunrise Welcomes SAAM for the month of April

By Florida's Original NatureCoaster™ Posted on April 7, 2018

Sunrise Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center in Pasco County, has announced that they will be hosting several events during the month of April for Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM).  Local organizations can participate by helping to spread awareness in numerous ways from hosting an event, attending the luncheon or by participating in the National Denim Day campaign which exists as an act of solidarity for violence against women.

Denim Day was originally created after a ruling in the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault. (  Sunrise’s Denim Day campaign on April 25th is in support of the effort to wear jeans with a purpose, support survivors and to educate yourself and others about sexual assault.

Tea(l) and Crumpets is an awareness luncheon hosted by the Dade City Women’s Club on April 19th from noon to 1 pm.  Special speakers will be on site to help attendees learn about all the programs and services that Sunrise offers to the Pasco County community.

Painting with a Purpose is being sponsored by Painting with a Twist in Wesley Chapel on April 15th starting at 1 pm.

If you or your organization would like to get involved, please contact Sunrise at 352-521-3358 or [email protected] for more information.

Sunrise of Pasco is an equal opportunity, non-profit services provider that offers victim services free of charge. Since 1982, Sunrise of Pasco has been providing free victim services to people in the community who are hurting. Sunrise maintains a 40-bed emergency shelter to provide protection for women and children in crisis; provides free counseling services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and foster a culture of non-violence through various community engagement efforts. The agency serves thousands of women, men and children annually, when – in a better world – this kind of work would not even be necessary.
