Toga for the Tower

By Kathy Green Posted on January 15, 2019

I’ve posted many times about the Old Homosassa Heritage Council (OHHC) and their first project–the Old Homosassa Water Tower.  Almost FIVE years ago, the water tower was tentatively  scheduled to be dismantled since the Homosassa Special Water District no longer used it and it would be costly for the district to repair.  That is when the Old Homosassa Historical Preservation Society was created.  The members raised the necessary funds to purchase the water tower and then the Old Homosassa Heritage Council–one of the councils of the Citrus County Historical Society— was formed to repair, restore, and maintain the property.

It took a LOT of fund raising. But the group did it.  The water tower is painted and stands as a proud historical landmark in Old Homosassa.

But OHHC is not finished with this project.  The water tower still needs landscaping and lighting and we are proactively working on those two issues.  Fundraising continues with two big events each year.

The first is a gala dinner.  Last year it was the Cocktail Hour for the Tower–a Valentine’s themed dinner.  Complete with a gourmet meal, desserts, live music, dancing, raffles, and door prizes.  The group had barely advertised the event when the tickets were sold out!

For 2019, the event will be Toga for the Tower.  And this year we will have the same fun offers but even more–can you say belly dancers?

Although OHHC just started advertising this event, the tickets are almost sold out!  This is again the idea of Connie Wright and Tim Gatto.  Connie actually came to our last OHHC meeting and demonstrated how to make a toga!  Yes, our group has a LOT of fun while we are doing good for the community!

Our second yearly fundraiser will be the giant yard sale at the Old Homosassa Community Day on April 6th.  Donations for the sale are already being accepted and all proceeds go towards the upgrades and maintenance for the Old Homosassa Water Tower.  More about this event in the coming weeks!
