UF/IFAS Extension provides non-biased, research-based information to America’s citizens. Pasco County provides an off-campus branch of the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) to serve as a bridge between the research labs of the university and the local community. The following classes and seminars are offered in February 2019.

Subject:           Learn & Grow Volunteer Days (Monthly Event)

Date:               February 2, 2019 (Saturday)

Time:               9:00-12:00 PM

Location:         Pasco County Farmden & Community Garden, 15029 14th Street, Dade City, FL 33523

Details:            Join us at the Pasco County Farmden & Community Garden the first Saturday of every month, through May 4, 2019, from 9 AM to 12 Noon, for our Learn & Grow volunteer days.  We will be weeding, harvesting, washing produce and planting.  Learn about gardening as you help us grow food for our community.  This fall, all the produce from our farm will be donated to the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry, which is open every Thursday in Dade City.  Bring a hat, water, gardening gloves and close toed shoes.  This is a family friendly event, but please leave your four-legged members at home.  Community garden plots are still available to lease for free at the community garden.  Contact Eden Santiago Gomez at [email protected] or (352) 518-0156 for more information.

Subject:           Ask a Master Gardener

Date:               February 6, 2019 (Wednesday)

Time:               5:30-6:30 PM  (before the seminar)

Details:            Is something munching the leaves on your perennials?  Are you wondering what plants grow best in Florida?  Then come to the Hudson Library the first Tuesday of each month for free garden advice.  Pasco County Master Gardeners will be in the lobby to answer all of your gardening questions.  If you’re having problems with an ailing plant, bring a sample for an on-the-spot diagnosis!

Details:            Rev up your soil engine with compost and nutrients!  Add seed and seedling fuel to the soil engine!  Start the engine and head to a harvest of healthy vegetables!  Learn how to tune up the soil engine and when to add seed and seedling fuel for the big spring vegetable race at this free UF/IFAS Pasco Extension seminar.  Registration recommended.

Details:            Bats are important to our environment.  They consume insects, pollinate plants and disperse seeds.  Bats are also threatened!  Their populations are declining, largely as a result of human activity.  Bats are misunderstood, and feared.  Join us and learn more about our beneficial flying friends at this free UF/IFAS Pasco Extension seminar.  Registration recommended at Eventbrite.

 

Subject:           Spring into Gardening Series!

Details:            Join us for this free UF/IFAS Pasco County Extension teaching series, where you will learn about various vegetable garden and composting theme topics.  Classes will take place the second Monday of each month, January through May 2019.

Subject:           Bring Your Own Bulbils – Air Potato Biological Control Program Special Event!

Details:            Air potato vine is an invasive weed crippling native habitats in many Central Florida communities.  A biological control program, involving the release of air potato beetles, is having a beneficial impact.  Come to this free UFIFAS Pasco Extension event to learn about air potato beetles sign up for the “air potato citizen science program”, watch intriguing demonstrations with the beetles, and grab free handouts, goodies and refreshments.  Bring in air potato bulbils (tubers) to win an air potato beetle t-shirt!  Get the scoop on the air potato biological control program during a special presentation by Dr. Chris Kerr, Biological Specialist with FDACS Division of Plant Industry.  Registration and parking are free.  Remember to bring air potato tubers to get free stuff!
