UF/IFAS Extension of Pasco County provides non-biased, research-based information to America’s citizens. We are an off-campus branch of the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) and serve as a bridge between the research labs of the university and the local community. Here is our schedule of classes and workshops for September, 2018.

Ask a Master Gardener – September 4, 2018 (Tuesday)

5:30-6:30 PM  (before the seminar) at the Hudson Library, 8012 Library Road (off Fivay Road), Hudson, FL 34667

Is something munching the leaves on your perennials?  Are you wondering what plants grow best in Florida?  Then come to the Hudson Library the first Tuesday of each month for free garden advice.  Pasco County Master Gardeners will be in the lobby to answer all of your gardening questions.  If you’re having problems with an ailing plant, bring a sample for an on-the-spot diagnosis!

Compost Workshop – September 4, 2018 (Tuesday)

6:30-7:30 PM at the Hudson Library, 8012 Library Road, Hudson, FL 34667

Come to this UF/IFAS Pasco County Composting Workshop and learn all of the benefits of using a compost and the “dos and don’ts” of composting.  Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the workshop starting time of 6:30 pm.  Pre-registration and payment required.  The $35.00 fee covers the cost of the compost unit and workshop instruction.  Limit one compost bin per household.  Attendance to the workshop is required by at least one household member.  No payment will be taken the day of the event.  No refunds.  Registration required on Eventbrite.

Learn How to Start Plants from Cuttings – September 4, 2018 (Tuesday)

6:30-7:30 PM at the Land O’ Lakes Library, 2818 Collier Parkway, Land O’ Lakes, FL

Get started propagating your own plants!  This is a hands on workshop presented by an experienced Master Gardener.  Please bring gardening scissors or pruners and gloves so you will be ready to actively participate!  Registration required at Eventbrite.

Cooking Matters (Series of 4 classes) – September 6 – October 4, 2018 (Thursdays)

10:00-11:30 AM at the Hugh Embry Library, 14215 4th Street, Dade City, FL 33523

The UF/IFAS Family & Consumer Sciences Agent for Pasco County is presenting “Cooking Matters”.  Topics will include how to identify a whole grain versus a refined grain, reading food labels, healthy fast food options and much more.  Learn all about nutrition and healthy eating while also sampling easy and healthy recipe ideas that you can enjoy at home.  This is a free 4-week program.  Program dates are: September 6, 13, 27 and October 4.  Any questions, please call FSC Agent Shari Bresin, 352-518-0156.

Food Safety Basics – September 6, 2018 (Thursday)

2:00-3:00 PM at the Centennial Park Branch Library, 5740 Moog Road, Holiday, FL 34690

It is estimated that one in six Americans get a food borne illness each year.  Are you doing all you can to prevent getting you and your loved ones sick?  Learn about the many ways to minimize your risk to food borne illness, including the proper temperatures to cook food to, what cross-contamination is, what high-risk foods certain groups of people should avoid, where items should be placed in the refrigerator, and more. Why Bats? – September 8, 2018 (Saturday)

Bats are important; they consume insects, pollinate plants and disperse seeds.  Bats are also threatened!  Their populations are declining, largely as a result of human activity.  Bats are misunderstood, and feared.  Join us and learn more about our beneficial flying friends at this free UF/IFAS Pasco County Extension seminar!   Registration required at Eventbrite.

Lichens are Unusual Organisms – September 13, 2018 (Thursday)

Winter Supplementation for Cattle – September 25, 2018 (Tuesday)
