Citrus County Parks & Recreation is pleased to announce they will be holding a American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguard Class, for participants 15 years and older. Prerequisite swim will be held on Thursday December 22, 2016 at 2:00pm, classes will run from Monday January 2 to Friday January 6, 2017 from 9:00am to 4:00pm. All classes and swimming will be at Bicentennial Pool in Crystal River.
The purpose of this course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. A Waterfront Certification is ideal for lifeguards looking to work at non-surf, open-water environments such as lakes and rivers, as well as traditional pools.
This program is offered in a blended learning format (online learning with instructor-led skill sessions). Candidates must have access to a computer to complete the on-line part of the course.
Candidates must be able to pass a prerequisite of a 550 yard swim, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing using the front crawl and breaststroke, tread water for two minutes using only the legs, and a timed swim to include going down to a depth of 10 feet.
Registration fee is $125.00. There will also be a $35.00 online fee paid to the American Red Cross. Participants will need to supply their book by downloading it for free at Redcross.org or purchasing a hard copy for $35.00 at redcross.org. Registration dead line is Wednesday December 22, 2016.
