Each year the United Nations recognizes World Oceans Day on June 8^th. 

World Oceans Day Cleanup – June 8th

Its purpose is to remind people of the importance of oceans, educate them on the impact of human actions on the ocean, and develop a worldwide movement of citizens to create a sustainable solution. 

• Over 70% of the planet is covered by ocean
• The ocean houses most of the earth’s biodiversity
• It produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen
• Main source of protein for more than a billion people worldwide
• A huge economic driver with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030

To celebrate World Oceans Day on June 8^th Keep Pasco Beautiful is coordinating two cleanups in Land o’ Lakes and Anclote Gulf, both of which are in the Tampa Bay watershed.  It is estimated that 80% of the trash that is in the ocean is from land.  One way that people can help protect our waters is to clean up trash before it reaches the waterways. Water from many stormwater systems throughout the region eventually lead to Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.

The cleanups will take place on June 8^th in Land o’ Lakes and Anclote Gulf from 9 am to 11 am.  If you are interested in volunteering please let me know and I will give you the specific details of where to meet.
