New Port Richey Independent Grocer Features Youth & Family Alternatives RAP House

Wright’s Natural Market Continues Reusable Shopping Tote Donation Program

Wright’s Natural Market has selected Youth and Family Alternatives, Inc. Runaway Alternative Project (RAP) House as the featured organization to be the recipient of their quarterly bag donation program. For every reusable shopping bag customers use now through the end of December, Wright’s will donate .05 to the FYA RAP House.

The program has been created to both encourage customers to remember their reusable totes and to highlight the many dedicated organizations that  have been created to improve the quality of life for residents in our community.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, in the United States alone, we use over 380 billion plastic bags and wraps yearly, requiring 12 million barrels of oil to create. Turtles often mistake plastic bags for jellyfish and eat them. The bags do not pass through the turtles’ digestive system and block their intestines. They die of starvation. Studies on dead turtles have found that more than 50 percent have plastic in their stomachs. Similarly, seabirds, fish and other marine critters also mistake pieces of plastic for food, or become entangled in plastic, leading to exhaustion, starvation and eventual death. RAP House is located in Pasco County, and can hold up to 20 youth, ages 10-17 who are runaway, homeless, need an out-of-home respite due to family conflict, need emergency shelter due to abuse/neglect or are experiencing foster home disruption.
